two actors who are playing the roles of the individuals in the Victorian love story that is the film they are involved in. The film flashes to the reality of the actors and the roles they are playing two centuries earlier. It is the film they are working in that offers the viewer a great deal of elements that speak of paganism and Christianity and is thus the part of the film that will be used in the following discussion which addresses these spiritual or religious themes. The French Lieutenants Woman As mentioned, "The movie is set about 2 centuries ago, when the industrial revolution brought not only technical but also social changes. Meryl Streep is The French Lieutenants Woman (Sarah), an introverted, melancholic woman, who became an outcast because of her relationship with a French Lieutenant, who left her and never returned" (The French Lieutenants Woman (1981)). The other primary actor is Jeremy Irons who "plays a young man (Charles) who gets engaged to the daughter of a rich family, who has profited from the latest developments, at the beginning of the film. It is on a walk with his fianc?e that he encounters The French Lieutenants Woman as she stands at the coast, watching the stormy sea, hoping that her lover would return" (The French Lieutenants Woman (1981)). From this simple and introductory illustration of the characters in the film we can immediately sense that there is a very powerful element of sexuality involved and it is that sexuality that serves as a subject for the ridicule or acceptance of a religious following. Clearly the woman, from a Christian perspective, is considered and outcast and a sinner. She has engaged in sexual intercourse while not married and immediately becomes part of a world not accepted ...
