Martys cousin Thomas and his wife, Virginia, provide the impetus for the conflict that arises between Marty and his mother concerning his interest in a woman. An examination of the plays structure demonstrates that the drama of the situation hinges on their contribution to the plot. Furthermore, the plot developments brought about by Thomas and Virginia add new insight into the character of the protagonist. The first part of Marty is concerned with establishing the protagonists character as an affable, agreeable fellow who has a "good heart." It also sets up the situation that Marty is facing -- that is, getting older with all of this brothers and sisters married with homes of their own, while he still lives with their mother. Martys mother wants what is best for her son and urges him -- as does everyone else -- to find a woman and get married. This is why, after agreeing to Thomas and Virginias plan that she should ask her sister Catherine to come live with her, Martys mother asks Thomas, "You know a place where he (Marty) can go where he can find a bride?" Thomas recommends the Waverly Ballroom to Martys mother, who comically parrots his words precisely telling Marty to go there because "Its loaded with tomatoes." When she pressures Marty to go out, he resists and gives a speech that allows the reader/audience to see the pain that female rejection has caused him.
