a number of heated relationships, each of which would spark new trends in his art. Picasso was driven by emotion and so, whenever he had just fallen in love, a
new great work of art-or new movement-would emerge. The thesis appears at first to be unusual as most artists and other creative people are sometimes stifled by obstacles such as
broken relationships or even new ones, but some thrive on it. Picasso seemingly is of the latter breed of artists who are propelled by love, moved by love and are
thus effectively able to be most productive at times of stress. Pablo Picassos first love seems to be Fernande Ulivier with whom he lived from 1905 through 1911 ("Picasso," 2001,
p.PG). There did not seem to be anything spectacular about the relationship. It did not last. Nevertheless, it seemed as if Picasso was affected by having a solitary relationship with
a woman. Between 1901 and 1904 Picasso went through his infamous Blue Period, which was named for the dominant use of blue in his works (2001, p.PG). From this
period, his most famous works were The Soup, Crouching Woman, and Blind Mans Meal and they seemed to reflect his own poverty at the time (2001, p.PG). Indeed, blue
is synonymous with sadness. One is said to be blue, or sad, and this reflected his entry to the art world as a painter.
He was in his early twenties during the blue period, which would occur at the turn of the century. But after he met Ulivier, his work began to change.
