Picasso and George Braque in the twentieth century brought about a totally new artistic perspective (Fleming 369). Just as linear perspective shook the art world of the Renaissance, Picassos Cubism
is still influencing the direction of modern art. In fact, numerous art experts have expressed the opinion that all of the later styles of twentieth century painting and sculpture
can either trace their origins to Cubism or to beginnings that evolved from their opposition to it (Hughes 93). The following examination of Cubism, with an emphasis on synthetic Cubism,
will illustrate that with synthetic Cubism, Picasso introduced a new radical form of expression in painting, which, in turn, created a brand new school of art. The influence
of Picasso and Cubism Plagens summarizes Picassos pervasive influence rather colorfully by saying that "Picasso looms over modern art like Thomas Edison over electric appliances" (28). What Plagens means by
this is that Picassos contribution to modern art, with Cubism, is analogous to Edisons contribution to the utilization of electricity. In other words, it wouldnt have happened without him. Jackson
