considering he was born and raised in Chile in the beginning of the 20th century. His life was simple in some ways, yet devastating in others. The following paper examines
one of his poems, A Soldier Sleeps. Pablo Neruda: A Soldier Sleeps When one understands that Neruda experienced devastation through war and through political powers, one can begin to
understand the power of this poem, and thus appreciate it for the meaning it held for Neruda. One author notes that, "The Spanish Civil War and the murder of Garc?a
Lorca, whom Neruda knew, affected him strongly and made him join the Republican movement, first in Spain, and later in France, where he started working on his collection of poems
Espa?a en el Coraz?n (1937)" (The Nobel Foundation). Such knowledge makes this particular poem of intriguing interest for it speaks of the suffering and imagery of death and the life
of a soldier. In this poem one sees how "So many zones/ of obscurity that the Plumed God/ might be born and coil his bulk/ over the forests, on
the roseate stone,/ so much anarchy of crazy waters" (Neruda 15-19). These words are incredibly symbolic, and without knowledge of the entire poem one would likely be a bit confused.
But, the poem examines the life and struggles of a soldier as he lays sleeping, and clearly bloodied and examining his cause. It speaks of political struggles and the struggles
of a people and obviously illustrates much of Nerudas opinions concerning such things. It is also perhaps intruging to note that "Even in times of great happiness, however, Neruda
tended to slip dark imagery into his poetry" (Zitrin). This poem seems to speak of such a thematic reality in his work as some images are pleasant such as when
