Pygmalion. Though the book, on the surface, appears to be about the transformation of a womans ability to better herself, it could be said that the story is as much about Henry Higgins transformation as well. In short summary, the story is about two dialecticians who make a bet about their professional abilities. Henry Higgins wagers that he can teach anyone to speak the Queens English and do it in short order. Neither man actually mean to carry through with the wager, but the next day, the flower girl who happened to be standing on the street, and whom was the butt of their cruel jokes on the street corner, offers Henry a shilling to teach her to speech properly. Her goal is to speak well enough to work in a flower shop, instead of selling them on the street corner. Intrigued by the idea and goaded into action by Colonel Pickering, Professor Higgins takes up the challenge. And a challenge it becomes. Eliza has to overcome her cockney accent, but in order for the Professor to win his wager, she must pass a couple of tests. First, she is to attend a garden party that the Professors mother is hosting and she is to pass as a lady. Secondly, she must attend an ambassadors party and again pass as part of Englands elite. These hurdles seem small in comparison to the hurdles of the human heart. Eliza has fallen for Professor Higgins, and though he does not readily admit it, it would seem that he has developed feelings for her. A confirmed bachelor, though, he is reticent to show his feelings and the reader is as torn as Eliza in trying to decide whether he loves her or not.
