lagging. There are more than 6 billion people in the world who are depending on our environment. But our environment is starting to show the stress of the demand. The
result is everything from increase in natural disasters to food shortages which, in turn, is leading to problems such as asthma, cancer and heart disease.
The World Health Organization points out that, thanks to environmental hazards, children around the world are ill and dying from diseases that could be prevented through better
environmental management. Nor is the WHO the only organization sounding the alarm. Researchers are increasingly coming up with evidence showing air contaminants as the trigger for illnesses such as asthma
and COPD, while contamination of ground water is having a dire impact on flora and plant life, which, in turn, has a negative impact on the ecosystem and ultimately human
life. Researchers are also pointing out that, for any treatment to really have an impact on health, environmental issues need to be dealt with.
The problem we face with environmental issues and public health is that its not a regional problem - it is, in fact, national in scope. As long as
some countries governments continue to look the other way, environmental issues such as pollution and contamination will continue to exist. Only when governments can take the problem seriously and then
work together to come up with a solution, will environmental issues be dealt with, and public health hopefully improve as a result. Introduction
