genius and insanity. In fact, many poets and novelists have contemplated the same question. In William Faulkners story, A Rose For Emily, the element of insanity is discussed and exampled. As Faulkners story unfolds, it seems that after the death of her father, Emily has never been the same. Her father, as the story shows, was of the Old South and never thought that any of the gentlemen callers were good enough for his daughter. He was domineering at best and so closeted his daughter that she was quite incapable of making a decision for herself. In fact, she is so stunted in her social development that when her father passes away, she keeps his body and tells the towns people that he is still alive and making decisions for her. After a time, however, the law comes looking for him and removes the body. When this happens, Emily slowly retreats into a world of her own making. In other words, goes insane. However, as the neighborhood begins to move forward and progress, Emily begins to see a gentleman. However, her inability to change with the ideas of the era have made her a prime target for heartache, as her suitor, not as devoted as Ms. Emily thinks, goes out with another woman. When he returns, Emily poisons him with arsenic. Finally, she closes her heart, her home and hope for the possibility of embracing change. As a result, she dies all alone in a decaying house. In Emilys case, her house is also a symbol of how she is. Once grand an fashionable, at the end of the story, Emily is falling apart, ugly, and fat. She too has a cellar that she keeps secrets buried in. As she rejects change, ...
