the reader. As a story that revolves solely around the character, Miss Brill focuses on the lack of development that this character has and examines both the internal and external
struggles that Miss Brill has as she confronts the realities of her life. This short story brilliantly examines a life that has gone unlived due to psychological eccentricities and a
delusional belief system. So it is in Mansfields Miss Brill that the reader is introduced to the inner musings of an old woman who has managed to remain insignificant most
of her adult life, though she is not convinced of that fact. However, events will force her into a personal growth moment in which she will have to answer for
and, in some respects, pay her dues for living a life of illusion. The point of view is told in the third person and chronicles the span of one whole
day in the life of Miss Brill. But, this day, of course, will differ from all others. What makes this a significant day in Miss Brills life is that she
is about to be handed a personal mirror of sorts which will shatter her illusion of who she really is and what she really does not have. "She had
really become an expert, she thought, at listening as though she didnt listen, at sitting in other peoples lives just for a minute while they talked round her(Mansfield 50).
She is a professional eavesdropper, to start with. She has constructed her life around lies that she has told herself. When she
is verbally assaulted in the park, her world begins to crumble. The delusions that she has lived with for so long no longer work.
