History of Christian Counseling Centers The history of the Christian counseling center can be said to go back as far as the early Christian churches. The apostle Paul wrote the believers in Thessalonica to "warn those who are idle, encourage the timid, help the weak, be patient with everyone" (1 Thessalonians 5:14). This would seem to indicate service rendered to people in times of turmoil. In its historic context, therapy (or counseling) is the attentive, careful helping of others. Christian Counseling centers are now widespread throughout the United States. David Powlison says that the Christian Counseling centers developed in basically three stages. Nearly every counseling center in the United States has undergone this transformation, from California to Florida(Powlison 1992). The reason that Christian counseling came about, in a clinical setting, was that by the 1960s or so, many people began to voice a concern that current church training methods were not addressing the problems of modern living. David Powlison also states that the first Christian psychologist was Clyde Narramore who founded the Christian Association for Psychological Studies. In Florida, the history is much the same as other parts of the country, it would seem. One of the first Christian Counseling centers appears to have started in the central part of the state in the late 1960s, much like most of the country. At first it seems to have been mostly Catholic oriented, but now, of course, all denominations are represented throughout the state.
