Its true that project managers are responsible for scheduling and for ensuring that deadlines are met in a timely fashion. But these men and women are more than simply schedulers. Project managers need a variety of skills and abilities to do everything from rally a team, to ensure something is completed in a timely fashion. To better understand what is required as a project manager, its first a good idea to understand what, exactly, a project is. The basic definition of a project is that it consists of a series, or collection, of work tasks with a definite beginning and end, that leads to a specified outcome (Verzuh, 1999). That outcome can consist of anything from a new product, implementation of a schedule or some other specified goal. The goal, therefore, of the project manager is to ensure that production of end-product results happens in a timely and cost-effective manner; that acceptable standards of quality are maintained and that the benefit is obtained by the organization that has made the investment in the project (Larsen, 2003). Given the complexities of some projects, project managers are needed to ensure that the project can be taken from that definite beginning to the end, so the final outcome is achieved with as little strain as possible. Along those lines, project managers required leadership skills, an ability to communicate, conflict resolution and negotiation skills, team-building abilities and listening skills (Vitella, 2001).
