and meal plans constitute a major part of the financial considerations. Imagine the horror of the average student to be able to afford every aspect of college, only to find
that he/she cannot afford the very books he/she needs to take a class. This is a serious problem on nearly every campus and even with the help of parents or
campus financial aid many students are simply forced to drop required courses because they cannot afford the textbooks. (THESIS)The student association or other student body, in conjunction with the university
leadership, needs to address this very serious problem, providing a textbook lending library, or other solution for those whose education will be less because they havent the ability to purchase
the textbooks. BODY Some students, with the help of a parent, or perhaps financial aid, will be able to purchase textbooks, but what about those who are unable to afford
it? This is a very serious problem for most students who sometimes have no other choice but to drop the course because they have a light budget. Given this then,
what sort of messages are the colleges sending to the student body? First of all, the message that is coming through loud and clear is: lower socio-economic students need not
apply. Basically meaning that minorities and white students with little or no visible means of support are directed, because of their lack of financial backing, into studying and pursing those
vocations which make the textbooks more affordable. Without realizing it, the campus has prejudicially determined who will get what degree based on a persons ability to purchase overpriced textbooks.
