between the concepts of "program evaluation" and "pure research." Though there is plenty of literature out there about pure research versus program evaluation,
the best definition comes from Simon Priests offering in 2001. The author points out, from the very start, that "evaluation and research are very different" - and that evaluation isnt
necessarily a form of research. But evaluation, he notes, is a lot less time-consuming (not to mention troublesome) than research. The difference? While research works toward proving that a particular
practice is effective, the purpose of evaluation is to improve a practices effectiveness (Priest, 2001). Evaluation, Priest, continues, can range from the fairly simple to the very complex. Furthermore, he
points out, if a "program" is defined as a "collection of several learning experiences held together by logistics," and "evaluation" considered to be an examination of the experiences, or outcomes,
of the programs, then we can see that there are vast differences between evaluation and research. To further separate these two terms, lets
turn to the dictionary. General definitions point out that to evaluate is to appraise, examine, or judge. To research, on the other hand, is to participate in scholarly and/or scientific
inquiries. Research, in fact, is considered to be "investigation or experimentation aimed at the discovery and interpretation of facts . . ." (Research, 2011).
How might we use these two different concepts in a real-life situation? Well, in a business situation, research would involve starting from scratch to prove a point or
