that yes, the iPhone was coming to market, that anyone even knew what the product was, what it looked like, or what it could do.
The product itself was a combination smart phone/web browser/iPod, and it ended up selling very well. The reason why it did so was because it played off the
popularity of the iPod, while adding smart phone characteristics, all together with a pretty cool design. Yet the iPhone didnt just appear out of nowhere. Even as far back as
1999, there were rumors of a combination iPod and mobile phone, especially when Apple registered the domain name iPhone.org (iPhone Timeline, 2009). Even as Apple CEO Steve Jobs was
coyly fending off questions about a smart phone with iPod capabilities, the company was hard at work inventing and developing the new product that would ultimately go on to be
a success. Apple Inc. is very secretive about its development plans, so secretive that sometimes its employees dont even know whats going on.
This is part of this companys culture. But one thing we can be sure about is that there was likely a product management plan in place, perhaps as far back
as 1999, to get the iPhone developed, produced and marketed to the general public. This plan likely included a variety of elements, including several prototypes and a variety of different
ways in which the product would be launched. In this paper, well discuss the plan through the product management tool of Stage Gating.
