launching of a new medicine is protected so the company can at least make back its expenses. However, the question arises in
terms of all industries -- what is stronger when it comes to launching and marketing, product development or product enhancement? Arguments
can be made on both sides -- product development means youre there first, that you have a real opportunity to help carve out the market, put forward your brand and
establish a niche. But, on the other hand, enhancements can put you up there as well. Consider that Bill Gates at Microsoft didnt invent the disk operating system -- that
was IBMs prevue. What Gates did, however, was enhance it, and earn millions from it. More than 20 years after its founding Microsoft still earns billions from product enhancement --
making products better -- rather than developing those products from scratch. In this paper, well examine fully the concepts both of product
development and product enhancement. Well examine the advantages and disadvantages of each, then well examine some case studies about companies that have developed and enhanced their products.
