variety of ways. Within this area is the question regarding the place of procedural and non-procedural languages in computer programming. Is there
a shift toward non-procedural languages in todays applications? Are we seeing the decline of procedural languages? Before attempting to answer these questions,
it would be useful to determine the differences between procedural and non-procedural languages. incidentally, as non-procedural languages are often referred to as "object-oriented" language, these terms will be used interchangeably.
In the most basic sense, programming languages allow communication between computer and developer (Schorsch, 2003). Such a language helps a developer translate
real-world actions into operations that computers can perform (Schorsch, 2003). The first generation languages were binary machine codes; second generation were assembly languages; third generation were machine-code independent (giving rise
to Fortran and COBOL) (Schorsch, 2003). From there, there is little agreement about subsequent generations - non-procedural (declarative) languages and others are listed in this group (Schorsch, 2003).
Because the object-oriented languages and paradigms (i.e., non-procedural) ended up providing a stronger return on investment for most companies, the overall world of
business applications has shift from procedural applications to the object-oriented ones (Sams Publishing, 2003). Experts also point to the fact that Structured
Query Language (SQL) relies too much around procedural languages that hamper SQL effectiveness as they dont allow for menu- prompt- and graphics-driven facilities and applications (Pascal, 1998).
