Having a plan in place, knowing who the key players and services are, having their contact information in several accessible places, and being fully trained on the implementation of such
a plan, can go a long way toward turning around a terrible situation. Also, included in this enhanced security measure are the private security industry. As a result of September
11, positive changes have been made which increase the effectiveness of each company as well as decreased the vulnerability of various firms, companies, and organizations. The private security industry includes
a wide a diverse group which provides services that include driving armed vehicles to monitoring alarm systems(Phillips 2003). Prior to September 11 the private security industry took a passive and
reactive role. However, after the terrorist bombings in the United States, the atmosphere changed drastically. Now, the private security industry has a far greater and more active role with the
public. Some of the changes have included increased vigilance in large areas where bigger groups of people might congregate, such as malls,
amusement parks, or sports stadiums. Many of the industries have also increased the number of surveillance personnel and armed guards, especially if their employees are routinely asked to work after
dark. In this capacity, then, private security has begun to assume some of the duties of the regular police force. Consider that it
used to be the routine task of the police officer to patrol private neighborhoods, and school properties. Now, many neighborhoods have their own security substations where private security provides much
of the same types of surveillance that the regular police used to provide. In this respect, then, it can be stated that the private industry is playing a wider role
