following September 11th it seemed every paranoid tendency was allowed to run amuck. This proclivity to assume guilt before innocence prompted many employers to pursue the practice of using hidden
cameras and surveillance, including email, in the workplace. However, in the end, it should be stated that employers are there to make sure that the company is productive and to
that end, the monitoring of employees activities while on the job are well within their rights. Part of the overall and encompassing problem with monitoring
email is that there is no definitive law which stipulates that the practice is or isnt allowable. A persons right to privacy apparently only covers companies that are not privately
owned or ones own home. Otherwise, those employees who find themselves working for a privately owned business may be subjected to a whole host of indignities, including cameras in the
restrooms and locker rooms. Many employers, however, believe that they are fully justified in the usage of email surveillance. Employers claim that they lose thousands of dollars each year
due to employee theft, drug use, or an inappropriate use of their time while on the job. Most employers have sunk a great deal of money into consulting firms and
equipment so that they can monitor their employees every move while onsite. In one respect most would state that if the boss owns the
company he should be able to do with it as he sees fit, even if that extends to protecting that which is his. However, while this seems logical, one has
to wonder about the vast amounts of money that will be wasted by the employer with the purchase of the necessary equipment for monitoring and watching his employees around the
