there are those handful of people who believe that, when closely examining the prison and inmate structure, that prison is like life or, in other words, that the lives of
prison inmates are said to reflect society at large. But is this true - can the prison system that we witness today end up reflecting society at large?
At first, the initial reaction would be to laugh at such an assertion. Prisons tend to be a fishbowl existence, where someone can get
three square meals a day and little more. Model prisoners are likely ignored, while the violent ones get isolation. Very little of the real world, on the surface, could compare
to life or structures in a prison. But the rise of victims rights groups is beginning to point a different view of
those who are in prison (Whiteley, 1998). Whiteley points out, for example, that while punishment is given to "wrongdoers," she isnt sure of the so-called "retributionist" type of punishment
is necessarily the way to go. She brings up the idea that upon hearing about Paul Bernardos murder (and torture) of victim Leslie Mahaffy, society, in general, is repulsed, believing
that "prison is too good" for the likes of Bernardo (Whiteley, 1998). He needs to die, note these people, die painfully and slowly, as he made Mahaffy die in the
same way. Whiteley, however, focuses more on the victims side of things, rather than that of the punishers. She notes that, for
example, "the victim is both a stakeholder in the social institution (of imprisonment) and an audience for the communication" (Whiteley, 1998). She
