Product Design The global product design assumes that, despite differences in cultures, language and beliefs, customers in different regions will buy similar products.
Under this particular model, the company keeps the main functional work at home, and sets up divisions (or franchises) to market the products, or services, abroad. The functions of this
particular organization are mainly centralized. Perhaps the most famous example of a company following a global product design is that of McDonalds
Corp. The chain, worldwide, is best-known for Big Macs, Quarter Pounders and Chicken McNuggets (McLellan, 2011). Certainly there are McDonalds outlets in different countries that offer regional-specific foods (such as
soy burgers in India and egg-and-croissant breakfasts in France). However, a customer will receive the same Big Mac, whether the McDonalds restaurant is in Des Moines, IA, Dublin Ireland or
Dehli, India (this latter also caters to beef-eaters). McDonalds and its fast-food competition is able to do this because of the
branding efforts. The McDonalds brand is synonymous with Big Macs and Quarter Pounders (much as the KFC brand is synonymous with fried chicken and Burger King with the Whopper). As
such, most customers in worldwide locations understand that if they go into a McDonalds, theyll dine on American-based cuisine. Again, McDonalds in recent years has done things to adapt to
