as a result of their use and abuse of drugs and alcohol prior to becoming pregnant. Most teens that come for counseling for substance abuse already have an assortment of
problems to deal with. Add those problems to the added complications of having a baby, and the problems mount. Therefore, the prevention of and treatment for pregnant teen minorities is
of paramount importance. In its most basic definition, a counselor is one who gives advice. One hopes that, that advice comes from an unbiased place of personal knowledge, education
and integrity. However, the last element that goes into the constitution of a counselor is that hidden aspect of self, that part that makes one an individual. This can add
so much to the overall effectiveness that a counselor has with a client or student, however, it can also be detrimental if the individuals behaviors and attitudes reflect a personal
bias or prejudice. One of the first things a counselor needs to do, as a part of professional development, is to do an analysis on themselves and ask themselves if
there are any discernible values and biases that he or she has grown up with. Having identified these potential areas of weakness, the professional must make some attempt, one would
think, to work on this area. For example, a counselor discovers that because of a childhood trauma, she has an unreasonable dislike for African Americans. Unfortunately, in her practice, which
is as a school counselor, there are many students, male and female, that are African American. Realizing the weakness in herself to consider all African Americans to be untrustworthy, she
