is probably little way that Abraham Lincoln, with his melancholy face and his tendency toward depression, would be elected today. By the same token, Democratic presidential nominee Al Gore was
accused of being too stiff with voters, and not warm and friendly enough. The question we have here is how does presumptive
Democratic presidential nominee John Kerry come across? How is he "officially" psychoanalyzed? Before applying James David Barbers "categories" to Kerry, lets first
see what the press is saying about him. Reeve (2004) notes that most Americans want their presidents to be likeable -- the
type of guy theyd have at their barbecues. But John Kerry, he notes, doesnt really come across as the "beer and brats" type of guy that Americans most love; he
tends to come across as wooden on television and public platforms (Reeve, 2004). Yet Starr (2004) doesnt necessarily see this as a problem; she indicates in her article that Kerry
(who comes from a wealthy New England family), "can come off as thoughtful and experienced but aloof and out of touch" (Starr, 2004). He does seem somewhat out of touch
and dull, though Starr also classifies him as "thoughtful and substantive," someone who is patient with questions and comments as well (Starr, 2004). This turns Kerry from someone who can
be considered stiff and dull into someone who is basically thoughtful, knowledgeable about the issues, and someone who doesnt necessarily shoot from the hip when answering questions of any kind
