shelter for their families, educate their children, and enjoy a few luxury items once in a while. However, there are those who meet each day with the realization that the
basic necessities of food, shelter and work, more than likely wont be met. While it would seem that the majority of the world is moving ahead with the present technologies
and advances in health care that abound, there are those that continue to suffer as an unvoiced minority. No one would argue with the idea that the worlds poor need
to be given aid. What causes so much controversy today is the implementation of viable programs, and indeed, the cause for the poverty. Two essayists have come forward in an
attempt to bring the plight of the poor to light. John Galbraith, Milton and Rose Friedman are some of the leading writers about social issues around the world. As in
the medical field, it is simply difficult to cure an illness without diagnosing what the underlying causes are first. In the case of poverty, there is great dissention over those
causes among the politicians that have the power to make and enact the laws, and those who are actually in the trenches, the aid workers and those who suffer from
the effects of poverty. Galbraith states that the politicians are mislead into believing that poverty is caused by inadequate environments, but he contends that a strong economy which offers more
jobs and lowers the cost of goods and housing is the answer to the disease of poverty(Galbraith,240). Galbraith would more than likely agree with the statement that the poor exist
because they are ignored and have no strong voice where politicians are concerned. There are no large groups of lobbyists to champion their cause, no massive funding with which to
