distress. These days, we know better - we know that these veterans, as well as veterans from more recent conflicts and other members of the population suffer from a disorder
known as Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder, or PTSD. Along with PTSD is acute stress disorder, which often goes hand-in-hand with PTSD. PSTD occurs after
someone experiences a traumatic event leading to horror, helplessness or extreme fear (Post Traumatic Stress Disorder). Trauma can include anything and everything from war (as mentioned above); to assault and
attacks (such as rape), natural disasters, abuse and serious accidents (Post Traumatic Stress Disorder). Interestingly enough, PTSD can result from witnessing or even learning of a tragic or violent act
or event (Post Traumatic Stress Disorder). The description of symptoms includes flashbacks, nightmares, serious anxiety and uncontrollable thoughts about the event in question (Mayo Clinic). The difference between PTSD and
regular issues following traumatic events is that the latter gets better over time. PTSD, however, doesnt get better over time; in fact, it can become worse.
PTSD can have a huge impact on an individuals life - flashbacks of the trauma alone can create problems, as they mean the individual actually relives the
trauma. Other symptoms that can have an impact include memory problems, hallucinations, difficulty concentrating, difficulty in maintaining close relationships, sleep troubles, and self-destructive behavior (alcohol and/or substance abuse) (Mayo Clinic).
Whats even worse is that PTSD symptoms can come and go - this impacts not only the individual suffering from the disorder, but loved ones and friends as well.
