day-to-day basis has no more reality than the role-playing games on the Internet. This statement, made by MIT professor Sherry Turkle, examples a growing trend in society. A scant two
decades ago we could not have predicted this turn of events. Post Modern subjects, it would seem, have finally met up with the ideas presented in the sci-fi genre.
Long considered a postmodernist philosopher, Turkle conducted a study where she observed the interaction between people who were participating in MUDs. A MUD is an alternate cyber reality which is
conducted on the internet. The entire reality is created with words and the people who enter these altered reality chat rooms create their own persona, religion, and culture. What Professor
Turkle began to notice was that there was a subtle shifting of reality. Reality to the game player, then, is only a state of mind. RL or real life was
only another role playing game, much as the one that was occurring on the screen. The appeal, of course, is that in virtual reality, the player is in control of
his or her own destiny, while in the RL (real world) often circumstances are out of their control. "...MUD players can develop a way of thinking in which life is
made up of many windows and RL is only one of them"(Turkle 1995). What she uncovered, however, has many alarmed. Have we traded our humanity for cyber altered reality? Turkle
writes, in her book, Life on the Screen: Identity in the Age of the Internet, "In sum, MUDs blur the boundaries between self and game, self and role, self and
simulation." The Sci-fi genre foresaw and warned against this day. Take for example a film of recent release titled, The Matrix.
