of women characters in Shakespeares productions, though the bard himself wrote strong women characters during his day and age. The Elizabethan Era and its influence upon the work of Shakespeare
is unmistakable, if forgivable. However, one would think as the centuries have progressed that the portrayal of the women in his plays would have fared better. They have not. In
fact, no matter how famous the actress in the ensuing onslaught of Shakespeare remakes for television and feature films, the viewpoint has ostensibly been male oriented. As such, then, nothing
has changed for the women characters in Shakespeares plays. Some might argue, of course, that in continuing to portray the women characters as they were in Elizabethan England that the
screenwriter is remaining true to the vision that Shakespeare had. However, this is presumptuous to say the least. Shakespeare bent, broke and pushed the envelope in nearly every facet of
the theater experience. It is to be assumed that if it had been possible that he, too, would have given his women characters more leeway and independence. However, since the
female roles had to be played by males, he was somewhat limited in how far he might go to portray the real life, the interior life, the true struggle of
a women faced with the types of situations that they face in his plays. Twelfth Night examples this most concisely. The plot of Twelfth Night settles around the conflicted love
life of several men in the kingdom of Illyria. Orsino pines away for the love of a woman named Olivia who will not pay any attention to him because she
is in mourning for her dead brother. Meanwhile, Viola, a survivor from a shipwreck finds herself on Illyrias shores. Assuming that she is the only survivor, that her twin brother,
