one of those elusive qualities that most companies seem to be trying and trying to search for (some with varying degrees of success). Harvard Business School professor Michael Porter, who
has introduced many business strategies to the marketplace, crafted his paper, "What is Strategy" pretty much to deal with these issues.
He points out in his paper that because todays hugely changing markets have led to further stress in terms of competitive advantage, that companies are trying to find the "magic
tool" to find that advantage and to stand out from the pack. Porter notes that these tools have included (but arent necessarily limited to) TQM, benchmarking and reengineering. While these
tools are all well and good, Porter contends that theyre interfering with strategy, even while improving short-term profitability. Porter notes that they dont do much to lead to sustainable profitability.
In fact, if overused, Porter contends that operational effectiveness (which is what these tools promote) are too easy to imitate, meaning competitive advantage doesnt work here.
Instead, he notes, the better thing for companies to do is to choose a valuable and unique position determined by activities that could be more difficult
to match and imitate. The issue here is: is Porter correct? Porter has been
renowned and famous for his views that finding a competitive advantage involves finding a companys unique focus and quality, then promoting that to the hilt in whatever way possible. He
