a time-consuming process. Enter the textbooks on how a person can learn everything there is to know about obtaining an MBA. Instead
of sitting in class, a person can read a particular book and then determine how to use the information presented. Some of these books are strong, some are complicated, others
are ineffective. The Portable MBA in Finance and Accounting (Third Edition), edited by John Leslie Livingstone and Theodore Grossman (published by John
Wiley and Sons), presents itself as a book containing "nationally renowned experts" who have been brought together by editors Livingstone and Grossman to offer "essential and practical advice for all
businesses." These businesses range from small firms (start-ups and medium-size growth) to large corporations. The claim to fame of this particular book (which is part of the well-known "Portable Business/MBA
series) is that the reader can pick up most of what he or she would need to know about all types of business based on advise from different writers.
While the book is certainly comprehensive in most ways, it has a couple of problems. First, as with all "compilation" type of books,
the quality of writing of the articles ranges from very good to incomprehensible and generally poor. The second problem is that this is more of a facts and figures books
that goes into the number basics of what an MBA would learn, including building a business plan, creating and maintaining balance sheets, deciding on incorporation and so on. What it
