or country. But since the Watergate Scandal during the early 1970s, peoples faith in government diminished. As a result, fewer and fewer people are becoming involved in public service or
public life. Unfortunately, politics is considered to be a dirty word (Des Jardin, 2001). Partly this is because politicians are perceived as dishonest and are always cast in a negative
light (Des Jardin, 2001). In addition, most people have a huge dislike or distrust of leaders with a lot of power - and this adds to negative images of politicians
as well (Des Jardin, 2001). In short, its difficult to consider a career in public service when public servants are held in such poor repute in this day and age.
Furthermore, public servants seem to be under the microscope more often than not. Because of the voyeuristic society in which we live
today, a president of the United States can be impeached for having an extra-marital affair and lying about it. Being under such a microscope does not make a good impression
for people who want to be involved with public service. In addition, people continue to be busy today - they have all
they can do to hold onto a job, raise their family (and try to raise that family with some strong moral values) and to simply make it to bed in
one piece by the end of the day (De Zengotita, 2003). Adding the stress and pressure of public life simply doesnt make a whole lot of sense to many of
these people. Unfortunately, such apathy doesnt involve only people running for office or public service, it also impacts the voters who are
