If these propaganda campaigns by such countries as China are successful, it is because they have learned their lessons well. Where did they learn such propaganda techniques? The United States.
This paper aims to show a direct parallel between the propaganda methods used by China to those used by the United States which have been utilized to manipulate both social
and political reforms. The essay by Jasper Becker, called Hungry Ghosts: Maos Secret Famine, in the sections titled: False Science, False Promises and How Many Died, states that the major
thrust of the propaganda for this Great Leap Forward plan of Maos made grand illusions and promises. These promises showed the people of China living in luxury, working very few
hours and a land where there was such abundance (agriculturally as well as financially) that China would be a world superpower like no other(Becker 1998). However, if that seems
laughable, Eric Schlossers Fast Food Nation, states that the big corporations, such as McDonalds, with global locations worldwide, advocate and project the same type of false imagery. The fictional American
dream that the commercials, alone, depict seem to be reiterating what Maos regime was stating. Those who are able to eat at McDonalds are those people who have made it
who are living the American Dream. What could BE more American than a hamburger, right? Who made that happen? McDonalds and their massive advertising campaigns which show ridiculous fantasies which
clash tragically with the reality of a fast food diet. Conversely, the reality of living Maos Great Leap Forward did not fare any better. The only thing that was
