the three chosen were China, Japan and Singapore. These three were chosen because they tend to be fairly business-friendly and anxious to engage in world trade. Additionally, Japan and Singapore
have had friendly relations with western cultures for years and understand them. The student needs to realize, however, that despite the fact these three countries are Asian, and tend to
follow Buddhist-Confucius cultures, they do differ in various and subtle ways. While China is still new to the international trading game, its eager to take part in world-wide trading.
Before beginning, however, its important to examine the cultural mores that form up these societies. To help in this endeavor, weve glanced at Geert
Hofstedes cultural dimensions. Its important for the student to analyze these cultural dimensions to determine what doing business might be like in these countries.
As China, Japan and Singapore are all Asian countries, they tend to have a fairly high Power Distance Index, are collective societies and tend to dislike uncertainty (in other
words, they will go out of their way to avoid risks and will stick with the tried-and true) (Hofstede, 2003). Additionally, all three cultures tend to have a "peer group"
culture -- in other words, they think on a collective level, rather than thinking individually, and will make decisions on a collective level (Hofstede, 2003).
There are slight differences between the three societies, however. Singapore, for the most part, tends to be more "westernized" than its Chinese and Japanese counterparts. As a result,
doing business with and making deals with Singapore business leaders may require a little less "face time" or "relationship time" (but this isnt necessarily something that can be counted on.
