His considerations on gender, education, democracy and the essence of the soul still serve as critical requirements for any scholar. Tripartate Theory of the Soul Platos Symposium tells the tale of a series of speeches given by three individuals on the topic of love. Several concepts of love are offered by the speechmakers, but only one has the truest definition. When one reads the symposium it becomes obvious that Plato believes in a two tiered explanation of reality. He would seem to be stating that there is a world of who we want to become and the world of who we are at the present. This idea can also be applied to the more metaphysical idea that the world of the present is known as the physical world that one is able to perceive using the sense. And in contrast, the world of who we want to be is the transcendent place of being. Each person, Plato believed, was born with an all knowing soul that accumulated information about things via past lives. The new life, then is spent recollecting the information which the soul already intrinsically knew. In a type of author/character debate, Plato explores the premises of his theory by having Socrates debate them. Plato theorized that the soul was made up of a power of three or a triumvirate of energies that animated the human being: reason, emotion and appetite. Of the three, reason is held in highest regard while emotion and appetite fall into line behind it. A person who is truly enlightened is one that allows reason to govern his actions.
