earn the title of great. Such is the case with one early philosopher named Plato. His considerations on gender, education, democracy and the essence of the soul still serve as
critical requirements for any scholar. His impact has had a direct impact on the development of many of the governments around the world, and directly upon the United States who
partially utilized some of his ideas on democracy from his great work, The Republic. Book Six, in particular speaks about a ship of state whereby democracy is examined. This metaphor,
alone, has left modern scholars wondering about the inherent flaws which are built in to the system. Is democracy, then, such a good idea, especially when it comes to choosing
ones leaders? In Book XI of Platos Republic he speaks of leaders in a democracy and why philosophers are considered bad sorts. Socrates states in this section that
philosophers make the worst kinds of leaders in the respect that they enjoy playing cat and mouse with peoples views, ideas and beliefs. This ultimately makes the common man suspicious
of their politicians. One can simply see that this bears out in the history of the American democracy. Philosophers, he states are more interested in winning the debate than in
reaching true conclusions and therefore may use their knowledge of language and logic to confuse the average person on the issues in order to win(Plato 487b-497a). It would seem
that Socrates considers that the common man hasnt the ability to see through the rhetoric of the politician/philosopher? And, if most philosophers are not trustworthy, then why do they continue
