Now, scientists have begun to reexamine those plants that are found in great abundance, but whose complete uses are still not completely understood. One of these plants would those plants
falling into the Betulaceae family, more commonly known as the Birch family. This particular family are called monoecious trees/shrubs and are comprised of six genera and over one hundred
species(Ketovich, 2001). While the leaves themselves are simple, there are parts to it that are also deciduous. "The male inflorescences are pendulous catkins composed of aggregations of variously simplified 3-flowered
cymes, each with a subtending bract and varying numbers of bractlets and 2-18 stamens"(Ketovich 2001). However, the female part of the plant are more cone shaped with two or three
flowers. Watson and Dallwitz state: Each female flower has a single compound 2-carpelled pistil with 2 deeply divided styles and an inferior
or nude ovary. A placental septum divides the lower part of the ovary into 2 locules, each containing 2 ovules. The fruit is a 1-seeded indehiscent nut or samara(Peyton 1996).
The Birch tree has long been involved in the life of mankind. Early man utilized the bark for writing upon and
the long straight trunks for making various household and hunting items. The characteristic white trunks are not as obvious in some of the species, such as B. pubescens and also
has "downy instead of warted twigs"(Peyton 1996). In general, the new growth on the trees are mahogany colored. The most recognizable varieties are the B. verrucosa, and B. alba(Peyton, 1996).
