beginning its greatest growth in popularity. Neither are those sites only those of relatively obscure companies. Currently, Hewlett-Packard, Boeing, Lufthansa, Yahoo!, Nortel
Networks, Lucent, WallStreetOnline and a host of others use PHP as its Web development language (Why Choose PHP?, 2005). History and Use A
Netcraft Survey conducted in May 2002 revealed that at that time, PHP and Microsofts Active Server Pages (ASP) occupied equal shares of their markets for "server-side scripting languages, with about
24% of the market each" (Langley, 2004; p. 76). PHP since has eclipsed ASP to move into the clear lead in development languages.
PHP initially was developed in 1994 by Greenland programmer Rasmus Lerdorf, who named it Personal Home Page tools. It was rewritten in 1997 by Andi Gutmans and Zeev
Suraski, and with Lerdorfs collaboration was released as PHP3 (Langley, 2004). Zend Technologies later released PHP4, which became the most widely used version that also included the "engine" that
Zend Technologies added to the basic PHP language. This addition "delivered improved modularity, support for a wider range of databases and better performance" (Langley, 2004; p. 76).
