capture a moment in time and forever suspend it for the viewer. These moments in time can serve to epitomize an era, a mood and in some cases can even tell us something about ourselves. The photographs analyzed, briefly, in this paper all fall into various genres, but all share that singular ability to draw the viewer in. The exhibition titled: Looking Up/Looking Down takes on the topic of racial hierarchies. Some of the pictures in this collection directly challenge the idea that racial hierarchies exist by emphasizing a certain characteristic or trait. A good example in this collection is the photo entitled: The Missing Link by Gerhard Sisters (1904). This picture is of an aboriginal Philippine and falls under the theme of racial segregation based on superiority. This photo is a half torso shot, showing a bare-chested man whose eyes seem to be only half open. His mouth hangs slack and there is no discernible background save a dirty gray hue. This picture was probably intended to justify and rationalize the colonization attempts which were going on at this time, showing the people that these natives were inferior to those who would rescue them from their inferior lives. What particularly makes one feel this way (especially if one lived during this time period) was the way the mouth hangs open, in animal-like fashion and the fact that he appears to have no clothes on. This man is clearly on display, or at least this is what would seem to be going on in this picture. This picture was chosen because of the others offered for selection, this one with its stark black on white is quite graphic and draws ones eye to it first.
