"I think so I must exist") is probably one of the better-known philosophical phrases that points to reality. But then again, Descartes is one of the better-known philosophers. Descartes claim
to fame was that he regarded reality in a dualistic mode; there was the physical realm of reality, one that encompassed matter and energy and could be measured (Rene Descartes,
2010). Then there was the mental realm, the area of the mind and the soul; but just because that realm couldnt be measured didnt mean it didnt exist (Rene Descartes,
2010). Descartes dual approach to reality benefitted scientists of the time, as it placed science and religion in different areas (Rene Descartes, 2010). It also placed study of the mind
outside of science (Rene Descartes, 2010). Yet Descartes was not the only person to wrestle with the issue of reality; and what
might be considered "real" and what might not be. Descartes arguments pointed out that reality can both be physical and not physical. The metaphysical branch of philosophy (which is from
the Greek "loving" and "wise") concerns itself with questions about reality (What is Philsophy?) Beyond that, however, philosophers throughout the ages have struggled to determine what, exactly, reality means.
Some (not Descartes) focused on the fact that reality is mainly material - these are the materialists (What is Philosophy?). Others, known as idealists,
believe that reality is mental or spiritual (What is Philosophy7) Then there are those like Descartes, who believe that reality consists of both, then attempt to interact the two.
