night, right before Disney, of man and animal in the animals natural habitat. We were told that it was the true wilderness. Now, of course, most of us realize that a good deal of what was shown was filmed largely on wild life preserves, and not truly wild, not in the truest sense of the word. This lack of true wild is what Jack Turner addresses in his book, The Wild Abstract. His revelation about the wild places and things came to him as he was contemplating his demise after an airplane wreck: " I settled back into the shade, even more bored. I could not get over the silence; it ate at me and I couldnt sit still. I wandered around looking for something interesting to do and found nothing. So I sat in the shade, oblivious to the glory that engulfed my every moment"(Turner,1996 ch.1). Turner believes that there are few places in the world now that can be truly called, wilderness. By its very definition, a wilderness has been untouched, unchanged, and unmanaged by man. And, he states that those precious few places that can be truly considered wild are quickly being destroyed, ironically enough, by the very systems designed to preserve them. In his book, he manages to leave no one in the environmental industry unscathed. He takes to task Natural resource managers, conservation biologists, environmental economists, park rangers, zoo directors, and even environmental activists. The reason that he has a real problem with these types of people and organizations is that they focus on the wrong things, inclining more to preserve and protect, rather than embracing a hands off policy of non-intervention.
