Philip Arthur Larkin, along with a group of other poets, called The Movement, sought to portray their thoughts about life as it was in the past, was presently, and would be in the future. Larkins career spanned many years and during that time his commentary on the human condition served to place him on the lists with other many great authors. BIOGRAPHICAL SECTION Larkin was born in England and it was there that he obtained most of his schooling. He had the usual literary endeavors, school yearbook staff, college magazines, and that sort of activity. He was not taken into the British army when World War II broke out because of his eyesight, and as such was able to finish his degree in college. He went on to continue his studies to become a librarian all the while continuing to work on his poetry and some novels. His first poem, called, "Ultimatum", was followed by "A Stone Church Damaged by a Bomb", "Mythological Introduction", and "I dreamed of an outthrust arm of Land"(Anthony). His novels Jill and A Girl in Winter began to prove to the literary world that he was a force to reckon with. It is said that much great poetry and other works of art are born of great pain. This may certainly have been the case in Arthur Larkins case. According to his official biography, his father was single-handedly responsible for most of Arthurs childhood troubles. Sydney Larkin seems to have worshipped the ground that Hitler walked on, kept portraits of the man in the house and attempted to indoctrinate all of his household in a very Nazi-esque manner(Philip Larkin).
