sources exist. Peter the Great, by most accounts, was a bear of a man. Larger than life, he ruled with an iron fist, loved life in a gregarious and unorthodox
manner, and brought Russia, kicking and screaming, into the modern era. Was it Peters force of will and personality which shaped Russias destiny? Would his type of leadership benefit a
country in the West as well? Everyone, large or small, famous or infamous, are shaped by their experiences. Peter is no exception. Given that his early childhood was filled
with political intrigue and blood baths on a frequent basis, it is no wonder that he would develop a nervous tick and other nervous habits as a grown man. Left
often to his own devices, Peter amused himself with anything and everything. He seems to have had a constant love of learning. A hands on type of learner, it has
been reported that he never toured a factory or explored a country but that he would be down in the trenches understanding how a machine worked, how something could be
improved, or how ones way of life was in a new part of the world. Perhaps because of this life long curiosity, Peter traveled a great deal. From these
travels he would be influenced by various artisans, craftsmen, and the way of life of many places. His personality was shaped, then, possibly by an innate fear of being attacked
(such as he had seen from his early childhood days) and of not being prepared. He seems to have internalized that knowledge is power and power was security and safety.
To that end, then, he learned all that he could about shipbuilding, often touring the ship yards and putting together many of the large armadas himself(**). Peter was well
