sufficient time to develop. Signs and symptoms of lung cancer include a constant cough, difficulty in breathing, blood or pus in the sputum, perpetual bronchitis or pneumonia, and chest
pain. One of the worst aspects of lung cancer is the fact that is metastasizes - or spreads - quite readily to other organs, which complicates the overall treatment
(Van Buskirk, 2006). The reason why this occurs more readily with lung cancer than most other cancers is due to the fact that the lungs are directly supplied by
the lymph and blood systems, which pick up cancerous cells from the lungs and distribute them elsewhere (Beckles et al, 2003). Lung cancer
is a respiratory condition that is often detected in extremely advanced stages, sometimes leaving the option open for surgery but most times caught too late to do much more than
allow the debilitating disorder to incapacitate the patient. Primarily caused by the carcinogenic properties of cigarettes, it can also develop from exposure to other toxic chemicals such as radon,
asbestos and nickel. Large-cell carcinomas are responsible for spreading from the lungs to the lymph nodes, into the chest and then to the gastrointestinal system. Patients with no
metastasis are more readily afforded the standard five-year survival rate compared with those whose lung cancer has already spread into other areas (Beckles et al, 2003).
The extent to which technological advancement has resulted in better medical imaging is both grand and far-reaching; that procedures such as MRI, CT, PET, bone scans, X-ray
and digital imaging are readily available speaks volumes with regard to how far the availability of detection has come. As technological advancements continued throughout the years, modified X-ray procedures,
