their votes for Pat Buchanan, a known right-wing candidate, rather than Gore. The election was ultimately decided by the Florida Supreme Court in favor of Bush. This, despite the fact
that Gore won 560,000 more votes in the so-called "popular" election than his rival. However, because Bush was awarded the 27 electoral votes in Florida, he was proclaimed President-Elect about
six weeks after the polls closed. This is not the first time the Electoral College cheated a candidate who had won the
popular vote in the country, but still ended up losing because they didnt get enough Electoral votes - the elections of 1888, 1876 and 1824 also meant that those gaining
the most votes didnt actually become president (Florig). Because of this, and because the Electoral College goes against the grain of a democracy, that it should be abolished. The Electoral
College, created in the late 18th century, is an anachronism today, and an affront to the American people who read about the issues, take time to vote for their candidate,
but still dont really have a say, because under "states take all" rules, the majority candidate ends up getting the Electoral Votes. This means that even if a candidate pulls
just 50.1% of the votes of a state, he receives all the electoral votes of that state. But what is this Electoral
