the employee to come out and ask, given there are so many dynamics involved. On the one hand, the employee thinks he (or she) has worked hard enough to earn
a raise. On the other hand, there is the fear that if he/she asks, the boss will think the employee is out of line. Furthermore, the employee might feel hampered
by company policy, which indicates that raises and any kind of bonuses are only granted once or twice a year. With all of this emotional clutter and misperceptions, its no
wonder it becomes difficult for the employee to ask for more money. But the key to success here (or at least a fair
hearing) is to try to persuade the boss that a raise is deserved, rather than command more money. The best way to do this, in a corporate or organizational situation,
is for the employee to prove that 1) he or she is worth the extra money (and then indicate reasons why) and 2) point out the consequences, or what might
happen if a raise isnt granted. Well also assume, to make this even more challenging, that the boss is a disagreeable sort who is trying to watch her companys budget.
An employee raise is probably the farthest thing from her mind. Heres how such a persuasion might be presented.
