The question the student has put forth has involved increasing efficiency in addition to productivity. The reason why we focus on motivation
and understanding it is fairly straightforward. Increasing productivity has been directly tied to increasing motivation. Very simply, if an employee isnt motivated, he or she wont want to work very
hard. And if he or she doesnt work, productivity suffers (along with everything else, such as customer service). Measuring motivation is not
an easy thing, however, as it is an intangible. The student requires tangible proof that productivity is on the rise (which well cover in the next section by listing performance
indicators and assessments). Through such indicators and assessments, it can be determined if any type of productivity/morale program is actually effective. According
to James Lindner in his article "Understanding employee motivation," whereas once employees might have been motivated by money, these days, motivation (and therefore productivity) are linked to a series of
complex factors (Lindner, 2002). In this paper, well examine first the tangibles for measurement, such as the performance indicators. Then well analyze the causes of underachievers and motivation. Then well
conclude the paper with action to be taken to solve the problem by introducing motivational theory and discussing the outcomes of such theory.
