inner core must be true to itself. This essence, call it courage, call it self determination, is observable in all men and women of greatness and is exampled in many
of the modern literature and movies of the day. What is fascinating to consider is that circumstance which brings a person to their personal crossroads, that point at which
they either choose to be true to themselves or to suffer irreparable damage to their own psyches. In Hemingways Old Man and the Sea, Santiago knows that he is too
old to go out fishing, and yet his personal truth lies upon the ocean. He knows that despite his bodys age, he must not come back without a catch. His
personal crossroad was in the decision to go to sea one last time, or to accept that his time as a productive fisherman are over. He chooses not to think
of himself in that way and so he must go to sea. Agnes, the main protagonist in the book, Agnes of God, faces her own inner and outer trials. This
book chronicles the courage of one woman to remain true to her belief even though the evidence and all of her associates do not believe her. Agnes exhibits what Tillich
calls affirming the power of being. The movie brings to mind the unanswered questions of where faith and belief are one in the same. The Trial of God raises many
of the same questions that Agnes of God raises, but in doing so chronicles the journey of Weisel as he places God on trial for the atrocities that have occurred.
