For most people, the appraisal process is nothing more than a plot foisted on the company by a diabolical human resources department that needs to justify its purpose. On the other side of the coin, however, CEOs and other leaders believe that the appraisal is an important tool when it comes to outlining goals and objectives and where employees fit into them (Gilchrist, 2003). Its true that many performance appraisal systems as they currently stand, are not effective for a variety of reasons (McLoughney, 2007; see also Gilchrist, 2003). But the experts also point out that the wise corporate leader is able to take appraisals and reviews and incorporate them into an overall effective performance management strategy (McLoughney, 2007).If one takes into account the definition of performance management as a process that helps leaders contribute to effective management of teams and employees to boost levels of organizational performances, than this definitely is the case (McLoughney, 2007). But how are performance appraisals and performance management linked? As mentioned above, the purpose of performance appraisal is to improve future performance (Gilchrist, 2003). Reviewing the past, through an appraisal, cant alter it, but it can provide tools and information as how an employee can perform at a required level, or even better, in the future (Gilchrist, 2003). McLoughney points out that performance management helps employees have a solid understanding of their objectives, and that those objectives are in tune with corporate objectives.
