such, ESL instructors rely on a variety of methods to teach non-English-speaking students how to grasp the English language. An important aspect of ESL instruction is building a relationship of
trust between the teacher and learners. In other words, the greater the learners trust in their teachers ability to speak and teach English, the more likely and able they are
to learn (Lee and Schallert, 2008). The three videos observed for this paper showed different types of tools used in the teaching
of English as a second language, as well as different types of interactions, behavior and relationships. However, all three methods demonstrated caring and trust between instructor and learners.
The observation videos focused on an ESL class of predominantly Chinese students and their instructor. The first video involved a Bingo game using simple English
words, the second discussed clothing, while the third involved the use of computers as an important ESL teaching tool. The Bingo game, in
video one was, as could be expected, a somewhat loud and rowdy affair (it seems as though whenever games enter any kind of classroom, students, no matter what their ages,
get excited, loud and talkative). But as the video went on, it became apparent that the teacher had more in mind than simple fun and games.
For one thing, the students were in groups, and were encouraged to help one another find the correct words. For another, the teacher would say the
word more than once, repeat it, spell it, then have her students spell the word and repeat it - all before they even found the words on their cards. The
