what qualities does a good peacemaker possess? Even more importantly, how can these qualities be applied to everyday life? In his article about
international peacekeeping deployments, Stanley (2003) points out that the typical peacekeeper has a myriad of skills, especially "soft skills" that include personal interaction and problem-solving. Along with those are team
skills - these include the willingness to exchange ideas and to reach compromises (Stanley, 2003). Flexibility is also a huge component (especially for peacekeepers that might find themselves emerged in
different cultural situations) (Stanley, 2003). Other qualities focus on the ability to resolve conflict, to negotiate, to manage stress and to communicate (Stanley, 2003). Stanley also throws in that peacekeepers
need to have maturity, stability and reliability. These necessary qualities make a great deal of sense - a UN peacekeeper, for example, is
involved with everything from humanitarian aid to trying to negotiate truces and other agreements between parties that may not want to cooperate with one another. Ouellet (2003) goes one step
further, indicating that any peacekeeping force (and by extrapolation, any peacekeeper that is a member of that force) comes with six characteristics. These are neutrality/impartiality, light military equipment use of
force only in self-defense, consent of conflicting parties, prerequisite of a ceasefire agreement and contribution of contingents on a voluntary basis (Ouellet, 2003).
The chances are pretty good that most of us wont be part of a UN Peacekeeping force. But there are qualities, characteristics and behaviors we can take from peacekeepers to
