College and based on the book "Roots of Wisdom" by Helen Buss Mitchell, professor of Philosophy at Howard Community College, each 30-minute video in the series parallels the "Roots of Wisdom" curriculum and supporting text and offers an introduction that is both informative and entertaining. One of the segments in this series is entitled "The Axial Age," which is a term that refers to the period from 600 to 200 B.C. The "Axial Age" was an era in antiquity that saw some of historys greatest philosophical geniuses?Socrates, Plato, Aristotle, Gautama the Buddha and Confucius (Feuerstein 73). This period has been characterized as an era in which these philosophers helped to propagate the "overcoming of mythos by reason," which in turn enabled the "discovery of the individual" and the "questioning of everything" that had been previously accepted (Heitz 597). In this video, students are presented with an introduction to a variety of subjects that include such topics of metaphysics and epistemology. Metaphysics is the branch of philosophy that attempts to describe and analyze the ultimate nature of existence. Within the topic of metaphysics, and its major area of concern, is the study of the nature of being, ontology. The video demonstrates that during the Axial Age, there occurred unprecedented burst of intellectual activity all over the world. In China, India, Africa, the Americas, and the Near East, philosophers began to look around them and ask questions about the nature of reality and the place of humanity in a greater cosmos. Epistemology, as demonstrated in this video, is a branch of philosophy that concerns theories that have been formulated through the centuries on sources, nature and the limits of human knowledge.
