whether we know it or not-- Paul Tillich. Paul Tillich wrote a remarkable work in 1952 entitled, The Courage to Be. The
main premise of the book is to illustrate that which makes an individual liberated enough to be themselves despite great obstacles, threats and evidence to the contrary. Though many great
works offer such examples in their characters, one astonishing example would be that of Alice Walkers The Color Purple, or from the Christian Bible in the examples of Moses in
Exodus and Esther in the book of Esther. The Color Purple sees Celie move from a woman battered and bruised, figuratively and spiritually,
to a woman who discovers her own inner truths and strengths. Clutching these to herself she is able to overcome the seemingly insurmountable odds which seem to stack against her
from page to page. This is not to say that her discover of self replaced fear, but rather, as Tillich explains that a person "is transcending, displacing it in its
place with the courage to be"(Tillich). In Exodus one watches as a young Hebrew boy is discovered and raised through the mercy of
an Egyptian princess, heir to one of the most powerful dynasties in the world. More than likely Moses destiny was determined as far as the Egyptians were concerned. And, yet,
Moses found himself. When he realized the truth of his birth, he realized that in order to be true to himself, he must reject all of the luxuries and status
that his luck had brought him. Though there were none who supported him at the beginning of his epic journey, he had the strength to stand alone in the face
